The other day a friend of mine remarked that we were having
a Green Township vacation. Okay, that’s one way to look at it . . . it’s not
quite as exciting as some of the places we’ve been, but it does have its
moments. We’ve gotten together with friends and family a few times, have been
having plenty of Skyline chili and Graeter’s ice cream, and the best news is we
brought the Scamp up from where it was staying, down with the carnival rides. It’s
in the driveway now so we can get it in tiptop shape and ready when we can get
back on the road again.
We’ve been down to Fernbank Park before and after the recent
floods, and my sister Amy and I also traveled down to Rabbit Hash, where our
friend Bill reported that the second flood brought the water up into the yard;
the first flood only made it over the road. Fortunately, though the yard is
quite soggy, it didn’t get near the house.

the spot where the front yard ends at the edge of the road. Photo by Bill.
One evening when we leaving Cleves, also down on the river,
after having dinner with friends, we saw a delightful rainbow in the sky behind the restaurant. We headed down
to Fernbank to see it again (a brief appearance) and then watched a sort
of stormy sunset over the river in the other direction as well.

A rainbow was a nice omen one evening after a
stormy day. That’s a telephone pole, not a crucifix,
in the center of the photograph under the rainbow.
I’ve been to downtown Cincinnati a few times while we were
here, to the Mercantile Library, which underwent a major renovation recently
and now has room for a lot more books, as well as to Findlay Market, a
breakfast restaurant called Maplewood. We also had a delightful Mother’s Day late
brunch at the 1931 restaurant (formerly the Palm Court) in the Carew Tower’s
Netherland Hilton.
So we’ve found plenty of ways to pass the time, but now we
are getting itchy to get back on the road and head west. Though we don’t know
exactly when yet, I am hoping it will be soon.
